You're capable of the extraordinary.

But it's not going to happen by accident.

We all go through it:

Of course we love dance.

Of course we want to grow.

But trying to balance adult life with dance life ... well kinda sucks.

If dance is your source of joy...it's time to stop holding back.

Question:

Have you ever watched another dancer just go for it - the kind of dancer who  exudes sheer joy and is completely comfortable in their own skin, and find yourself wishing you could do the same?

The big secret is that there is no secret. No dancer is more capable or magical than the next-- it comes down to information, knowledge, and empowerment.

The big secret is that there is no secret. No dancer is more capable or magical than the next-- it comes down to information, knowledge, and empowerment.

 HERE'S WHAT YOU

MIGHT NOT KNOW

Integrating more dance into your busy adult life can be done. And it will bring you forward in every way:

  • MOVE WITH CONFIDENCE

No one thinks or moves like you. One of the best feelings in the world is uninhibited expression: it tunes you in with yourself and creates a whole new colorful world to explore
  • ROCK YOUR PERFORMANCE

It's your turn to rock any dance floor-- whether it's the stage, studio, or your living room floor. There is a technique to refining your movement & performance-- and it's now at your disposal.
  • BUILD A FLEXIBLE, STRONG BODY

Stretching feels so good, but there's also a science to it, with each body needing a different plan to create both the desired flexibility and the strength needed to support it
  • TAP INTO YOUR INNER GENIUS

There is an innate creativity within each of us, and we mistakenly assume it's a matter of "inspiration" or "natural-born gifts", but creativity is a habit to be cultivated and implemented
  • PICK UP CHOREOGRAPHY MORE QUICKLY

Spend less time "in your head"  and more time in your body,  starting by understanding how muscle memory works and how to be strategic about the learning process
  • BUILD CONSISTENCY IN YOUR PRACTICE

Consistency is a cornerstone for thriving, but it also leaves us feeling unnecessary and unhelpful guilt. Consistency is about how often, not how long. Small habits will compound over time

Even though the reasons to pursue dance are obvious, the path to doing it successfully is anything but.

We've been taught that learning to dance happens in the studio.

Yet...

Picture it: You've made it to class. After a long day taking care of one thing after another, you were tempted to stay home, but you pushed yourself and here you are, ready to move.

Ah, the studio. The mirrors, the floor, the music. Your favorite teachers and their quirks, the dancers sharing the space with you...there's nothing in the world like it.

And then it happens.

You feel that forboding twinge of pain from that same old injury.

Or a piece of great choreography seems totally out of reach because your leg just doesn't do that.

Or suddenly your brain is enveloped in fog and it feels like you can't pick anything up.

Or it's time to improv and you just feel so ridiculous.

This is the thing that brings you the most joy-- so why does it get so complicated?

The answer is surprisingly simple-- we've been taught that dance is something to be learned only inside the studio. That as long as we imitate the teacher, we're learning dance and should steadily progress..

Yes, the studio is crucial. The studio is where we gather in community and live it out. It is irreplaceable in both information and experience.

But a movement class simply doesn't offer enough the time to dive into all the layers of dance. Consider the depth of dance compared to the amount of time we have in a studio.

We show up, week after week, and in the meantime, adult life constantly pulls us away from consistent training and we get frustrated with ourselves in the process.

Hear me out: your relationship with dance should never be complicated.

You're not failing or inconsistent. You don't lack passion or discipline. Your body isn't a hindrance.

You were given a passion for dance, and you deserve to revel in it, explore it, and color your life with it. Dance makes your world a better place, and right now, right this very moment, you have everything you need  to start a powerful journey forward. All you need it a bit of guidance.

But first, we need to stop lying to ourselves...

But first, we need to stop lying to ourselves...

There are five lies dancers often tell themselves:

LIE 1

"I Need More Technique To Be A Great Dancer"

It may sound like a feel good, woo-woo statement, but technique does not separate average dancers from mesmerizing dancers.

Technique is important, but it does not make a great dancer. I've seen dancers that can execute seven turn, great leaps, stunning tricks, and yet not evoke a single real response or connection. I've seen beginning dancers move with such pure reckless abandon that no one could look away.

Technique is one piece of the puzzle. One.

LIE 2

"My Body Doesn't Do That"

Your body is (yes, I do want say "a wonderland") amazing. It is. Humans are incredibly adaptable, especially with focused effort on the right things. Your body is capable of dancing, and dancing well. No two dancers on earth are alike, so the key is to work with your body and instead of speaking against it and start developing a plan that moves you towards your goals

LIE 3

"I Can't Find The Time"

Time and priority are interchangeable words here. We make time for what matters. That's the truth...but an even greater truth is that priorities change multiple times in life, and not everything can be at the top. As dancers we get so down ourselves when we can't be consistent, but this doesn't mean you're not a dancer or are a lesser dancer. What you need is support and resources to meet you where you are today.

LIE 4

"I Can't Get Out Of My Head"

Whether its comparison traps, getting hyper-focused on learning and forgetting to feel, or simply the fear of looking dumb-- the great secret is that everyone goes through it. There's nothing lacking in you. If you've ever experienced a moment in life where you were totally "in the zone"; absorbed and captivated by the task at hand, then you know what it feels like to be fully present. Getting out of your head is the practice of presence, and it's a skill. One that can be honed
through a series of choices.

LIE 5

"I Don't Pick Up Movement Quickly Enough"

Too many dancers get frustrated and halted in class because they don't feel they're picking up choreography quickly enough.  Most of the time we go into class, attempt to learn the movement and either feel good or don't. We let the thing run it's course by default. Amazingly, we're never taught the skill of muscle memory. It's not just a default function-- there are proven tools for approaching movement, and we rarely get a chance to be deliberate about them.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret; something I rarely say out loud...

The dance world can be a serious mess.

I'm not supposed to say that. I love dance. I built my career around it, so I am only supposed to tell you how great it is.

But consider...

While most dancers will use words like "freedom", "joy", and "alive" when asked why they dance, they often hit seasons where they feel anything but. Dance is so personal and vulnerable, and those seasons can be really discouraging.

What do we do when dance starts feeling like work?

To add more complication, social media has glorified and highlighted dance in a way that often leaves us struggling with comparison and emphasizes some really misleading things.

Dance programs often teach dancers that turns and jumps make a dancer more credible (but talk to Bboys, Bollywood, or Butoh dancers about that). We are taught to imitate before we're taught to feel.

We rarely get any real education on how our bodies and minds work so that we can make mindful choices toward progress.

Hi, I'm April

My journey with dance has been a mess many times. I started at 25 years old and learned every lesson the hard way.

I've also owned my studio since 2011, and I've lost track of how many dancers battle the same things again and again. The same things I've battled. It's not because they're stupid, it's because they love dance and simply haven't been given the guidance to understand all parts of it. We only become frustrated about something that we also care about.

Whether dance is your favorite way to release tension or your favorite way to express, it's time to dive into a new way of learning, connecting, and growing. A method that doesn't ignore 90% of the process.

You're going to love it...

"I had no idea that I was missing so much information. I just listened to the "reset" training right before class, and I swear, I felt like an entirely different person when I stepped into the studio. It was like Dorothy when suddenly she lands in Oz. I'm going to have to listen three more times"
